Summer 2008 at VACSCAfter a 10 week summer camp program at VACSC from June 16 through August 22, 2008, sixty youths who attended daily from 10am to 4:30pm at VACSC, are ready to go back to school full of energy and academic knowledge. During the summer camp program, the youths, whose ages ranged from 5 to 18 years old, enjoyed academic learning in topics such as English, Math, and Science/Art/Dancing. In addition to academics, the youths from 9th to 12th grade studied for the SAT to prepare themselves ready for the road to college. In addition, the youth from 14 to 18 years old were also given a chance to practice working in the office to gain valuable life skill training. All of the youths had a chance to do community service such as weekly gardening at Tubman Elementary school and preparing the lunch boxes at Martha’s Table as well as to attend the ground breaking ceremony with other community youths at Ward 1 in the Columbia Heights Park with the presence of council member Jim Graham. During the summer, the youth participated in various field trips to locations such as Six Flags America, Sandy Point Beach, Wheaton Ice Skating Rink. The youths also took part in several outdoor activities like a picnic at Wheaton Regional Park and weekly swimming at Francis Pool and Water Rides pool in Silver Spring, Md. All the youth expressed their pleasure and enjoyment during the summer camp program and were excited about the chance to next summer.
